The translation material of this E-C translation practice report is based on the short story The Tide by Australian writer Glen Phillips.Based on the social background of old Shanghai in the 1920 s,the short story focuses on the bizarre death of a female college student,telling a series of stories of the protagonist and female protagonist in the process of investigating the death case.The text type of this translation practice is expressive text.The original text is characterized by precise and concise words,distinctive dialogue and regional culture.The translator completes the translation practice under the guidance of adaptation theory,and summarizes the difficulties encountered in the translation practice and the translation strategies to solve such difficulties.This report is composed of translation task description,translation process description,translation case analysis and conclusion.The first part is a brief introduction of the writer Glen Phillips and his short story,including the stylistic features of the source text and the purpose of this task.The second part describes preparations for translation,translation process and proofreading.The third part is translation case analysis,which is the core of the report.Guided by adaptation theory and based on the principles of contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptation processes,the translator discusses the difficulties encountered in the process of translation from three aspects of character description,environment description and culture-loaded words,and adopts such translation methods as conversion of part of speech,selection of word meaning,combination,four-character phrases,restructuring of adverbial clause and domestication to solve the difficulties.The fourth part is the summary of translation practice,which is the reflection and summary of the translator’s translation process.It is hoped that the translation skills summarized in this translation practice can provide reference for Australian literary translation researchers.
