| Originated from Chapter II of the book Metaphor Wars: Conceptual Metaphors in Human Life written by Raymond W.Gibbs,Jr.,the source text(ST)introduces some conceptual metaphor theories(CMT)and how conceptual metaphor occurs.Efforts on a comprehensive analysis of the existing empirical research in the book are made to clarify critical factors or variables of metaphor theory on the basis of maintaining the existing views of other scholars. The target text(TT)enables readers to realize that conceptual metaphor exists in cognitive system and unconsciously guides the daily language. Many metaphorical expressions exist in ST whose translation is the biggest challenge for this project. To address this problem, the translator analyzes ST,TT,and the translational eco-environment under the guidance of Gengshen Hu’s Translation as Adaptation and Selection(TAS)theory, and accomplishes the translation with approaches to metaphor translation proposed by Peter Newmark. The report is divided into five chapters. An overview of the project is given in chapter one.The second chapter gives an introduction to the author and main content of the book, and analyzes ST in detail from text type and language features. The third chapter first describes the theoretical guidance TAS and then analyzes its application in an example. The fourth chapter gives a detailed analysis to the major difficulty, that is metaphor translation under the guidance of TAS theory. The fifth chapter is a summary of the translation project, including relevant experience and limitations. |
