| This is a report of English-Chinese translation project based on chapter one and chapter two of Karen Stocker’s work “I Won’t Stay Indian,I’ll Keep Studying”: race,place,and discrimination in a Costa Rican high school.These two chapters focus on gender inequality in Santa Rosa and its history.The original text belongs to narrative article.Whether in English or Chinese,metaphors always exist.There is no exception with this project.In order to deal with the translation of metaphors,the author look through and consult many research papers,finding there isn’t a consensus on metaphor translation methods.To have a better understanding and translation of metaphors,the author,based on Peter Newmark’s metaphor theory,conclude a more concise translation method.They are literal translation,liberal translation and borrowing translation.Finally,the author can have a better understanding of the text,so the translation would become more natural and authentic.During this process,the author realize her own weaknesses in translation and figure out the direction towards the future’s hard work.A qualified translator must be equipped with excellent bilingual ability,which requires author to improve her bilingual level;furthermore,it is necessary to have certain knowledge reserve.So,the author should master as much interdisciplinary knowledge as possible;finally,the author has a deeper learning of metaphor,strengthening her professional quality.All in all,learning has no ending.The author will be strict with herself and continually enhance translation ability. |
