A Study On The Revision Caused By Duan’s Annotation The Headwords Of Shuo Wen Jie Zi

Origin of Chinese Characters(hereinafter referred to as Origin)is a very important work in Chinese philology,and there have been many studies of the Origin in later generations,among which the Annotation to Origin of Chinese Characters(hereinafter referred to as Duan Annotation)made by Duan Yucai occupies an extremely important position.However,the evaluation in later ages on Duan Yucai’s corrections of the Origin has been mixed,with many calling it "arbitrary and presumptuous".In this paper,I have analyzed and compiled all the corrections made by Duan Annotation to the Origin according to the four major methods of proofreading summarized by Mr.Chen Yuan,that is,self-proofreading method,pair proofreading method,comparison proofreading method,and reasoning proofreading method,including: 77 corrections to the character order of Origin,in which 64 corrections based on the reasoning proofreading method and 13 corrections based on the comparison proofreading method;25 additions to the seal script,including 7additions according to the reasoning method and 18 additions according to the comparison method;24 deletions of seal characters,including 23 deletions according to the reasoning method and 1 deletion according to the comparison method.Thus it can be seen that Duan Annotation of the Origin has mainly applied the rational method.The traditional Chinese "Philology" was dominated by the "philological" approach,such as documentary research,and the basic tenet of its research work is that "words have evidence".Therefore,there is a lot of controversy over the reasoning method used in Duan Annotation of the Origin.In 2015,Feng Shengli proposed the idea of "reasoning" and argued that the research method of the Ganjia school has the "reasoning" element of modern science.Influenced by Feng Shengli’s thought of "discipline must",this paper holds that the correction method used by Duan Yucai is scientific.This paper discusses the relationship between philology and linguistics,and analyzes the examples of the prefix of shuo wen corrected by duan’s family,to demonstrate the scientificity of duan’s correction.First of all,this paper starts from exploring the relationship between philology and linguistics,considering that philology and linguistics derived from the same origin,and that traditional Chinese "Philology" research contains both philological and linguistic components.Duan Yucai’s method of "reasoning proofreading" may not be rigorous enough from the perspective of traditional Philology proofreading methods,but it is similar to the deductive method in linguistic research.Looking at the whole development history of linguistics,the reasoning proofreading method is scientific.Duan Yucai’s extensive use of the reasoning proofreading method is scientific in attitude and method,and can be regarded as a transcendence of traditional linguistics.Secondly,this paper sorts out and analyzes the correction of the prefix of Shuowen by Duan Annotation,discusses the rationality of the correction,and demonstrates the rationality of adding the seal characters in combination with unearthed documents.It is believed that the correction method used in the revision of Shuowen is scientific.Duan Annotation is mostly considered "arbitrary" because of the bias of researchers of "philology" who take documentary research as their basic method.
