Yunnan Province not only has a large number of ethnic minorities but also boasts rich and unique minority cultures.Books are an important carrier of cultures but few books about minority cultures have been translated. Therefore, translating these books plays a crucial role in spreading Chinese culture. It can let the people of other countries experience ethnic minority cultures.Fire-Taken Child is an important book and introduces the folk tales of the Yi people and the Hani people. Therefore, the translator chose Chapter Six to Chapter Nine of the book as her translation task. This translation task is guided by the reader’s response theory. The reader’s response theory indicates that the readers are the service objects of the translated text. The target readers’ reactions to the target text should be compared with the source language readers’ reactions to the source text to see whether their reactions are consistent. This is a way to evaluate the quality of the translated work.Under the guidance of the reader’s response theory, this report mainly analyzes the difficulties and solutions in the process of translation.Fire-Taken Child describes a large number of dialogues that have diverse contents and minorities’ cultural features. Moreover,in terms of characterization, their images are vivid.Besides,in the aspect of the environment description, many rhetorical devices are used to make the readers feel as if they are in that environment. Therefore,to make the target readers get the same or similar understanding with the Chinese readers, the translator used a variety of translation methods such as adapted translation, omission and addition to translate the source text under the guidance of the reader’s response theory. As the guidance theory, the reader’s response theory can make translation concise and smooth.Besides,it can make the translation conform to the linguistic habits of the target readers. Thus, they can learn more cultures about ethnic minorities.
