A Report On The Vietnamese-chinese Translation Of The Ancient Township Treaty In The Delta Of North Vietnam(Excerpt):a Perspective Of Culture-specific Items

Language is the carrier of culture,different historical cultures are embodied in different languages.Culture-loaded words are the ones contain rich culture language and has a specific ethnic cultural color.As a container of culture,these words can reflect disparity of geographical environments,life styles,social systems,historical backgrounds,religious beliefs among different nations and countries.The Vietnamese township treaty reflects the nature and features of the formation and development of each village from different angles,since we can understand the basic basis,internal logic and cultural characteristics of the grass-roots units in ancient Vietnamese feudal society,especially the governance and operation of village communities by studying the township treaty.There are a large number of culture-loaded words in the text “Huong uoc co lang xa dong bang Bac Bo”(The ancient township treaty in the Delta of North Vietnam),in addition,the text also include many quoted and paraphrased contents,classical Chinese sentence patterns and the content,causing it to be particular complicated in sentence patterns,thereby adding some difficulties to the author’s translation.Taking the translation strategy of eleven cultural-specific items by the Spanish theorist Aixelá Javier Franco as the entry point,and the author divides the cultural-specific items into four categories: ecological,social,religious,and language culture-loaded words by adopting the classification method of Eugene Nida.It specifically analyzes the translation strategies and methods of different kinds of culture-loaded words from the perspective of vocabularies.In summary,the author uses a lot of culture-specific item strategies in the translation process of culture-loaded words,such as Orthographic adaptation(Transliteration of Chinese and Vietnamese),Linguistic(non-cultural)translation(Literal translation),Extratextual gloss,Intratextual gloss,Naturalization.In addition,some other methods are also used by the author,for examples,free translation,back translation,and combined translation.It is suggested that different translation strategies and methods shall be adopted in translating different culture-loaded words,so that readers can better understand the original text.The author hopes that this paper can play a role in promoting cultural exchanges between the two countries,historical research and related translation work.
