A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Future Is Faster Than You Think(Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Reiss’s Text Typology Theory

With the development of globalization and science and technology in the world,the scientific and technological exchanges between countries are becoming more and more frequent.Popular science texts,as one of the media to spread scientific and technological information,have also been paid more and more attention.People are eager to acquire more information concerning the latest domestic and overseas scientific and technological hot spots through popular science texts,so the translation of them has become the demand of today’s society.Therefore the translator selected the seventh chapter of the book The Future Is Faster Than You Think as the source text for this translation practice.In this chapter,some representative converging exponentials in recent years have been introduced and what effect they have on the entertainment industry has been discussed.It is a popular science text with scientific,ideological and popular style.The source text is translated under the guidance of Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory.Reiss divided texts into four main types on the basis of the functions of the language:the informative,the expressive,the operative,and the audio-visual.She proposed that the choice of translation strategies must be based on the analysis of the text type of the source text.She also pointed out that a text may contain different text functions at the same time,but one of them is the dominant one.According to Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory,the source text in this practice belongs to both informative and operative texts.The translator analyzed the source text from the lexical,syntactic and discourse levels,put forward that when translating this kind of materials,target language readers should be put as the center,and the accuracy and readability of the content are supposed to be paid attention at the same time.Some concrete translation methods such as literal translation,free translation and zero translation can be adopted to achieve the main purpose of transmitting information.Through this practice,the translator hopes to summarize the feasible translation methods for the translation of popular science texts,constantly improve the quality of translation,and make popular science texts play a greater role in scientific and technological exchanges.
