On The Translation Of Popular Science Texts From The Perspective Of Text Typology

With the implementation of the strategy for invigorating China through science and education,China has attached greater importance to the popularization of science and technology as the economy develops.The introduction and translation of science popularization works is a major part of science popularization and a positive response to the national strategy.The source text of this thesis is excerpted from a multi-functional,teenager-targeted popular science text,Abnormal Psychology,with the informative function as the main function and the operative function as another one.The goal is to popularize psychological expertise among young readers,and spread scientific information in an effective way that arouses their interests in reading.Currently,although there are a number of translation studies guided by text type theory,most of the texts have one single function.Among them,informative texts are the mostly studied.However,these studies provide relatively weak guidance for the study of multi-functional translations of popular science,and the translation strategies and methods they propose are not well adapted to specific texts.Based on textual typology theory,this thesis adopts a case study approach and analyzes the translation of Abnormal Psychology at the lexical,syntactic,and textual levels.This thesis concludes that the text typology theory serves as an effective guide in the translation of popular science texts.At the lexical level,it is necessary to ensure that the terminology is accurate and consistent;to confirm whether the lexical meaning of semi-technical words is extended in a specific academic context by taking into account the context and professional knowledge background;and to pay attention to the use of interactive linguistic expressions such as reader’s indicative words in order to bring the text closer to the target readers,arouse their reading interests and thus realize the operative function of the translation in terms of enhancing the affinity of the text.At the syntactic level,it is necessary to adopt such translation methods as inversion,conversion in the voices and division so as to ensure the fluency and smoothness of the translation and convey the information in an effective way.At the discourse level,it is advisable to achieve intra-linguistic coherence by adopting cohesive devices and constructing coherence,and at the same time to achieve extra-linguistic coherence by focusing on rebuilding the coherence between pictures and texts in the source text and maintaining the consistency of the style so as to improve the readability of the translated text and facilitate the communication of popular science texts.
