The translation material of E-C translation report has been excerpted from All about Love: Anatomy of an Unruly Emotion, written by Lisa Appignanesi. The sources of this book are various.Appignanesi draws inspiration from previous experience with her families and friends as well as works of psychologists, novelists and playwrights. The book addresses the dilemmas and contradictions of love throughout a lifetime—from the tumult of love to marriage, family, and friendships. The translator would analyze the applications of strategies in the translation with a case analysis of All about Love based on the Chesterman’s translation norm theory.Andrew Chesterman,as a representative role, delved into translation theories of Toury and Levy and other scholars, and put forward that the translation norms can subtly influence the thinking mode of the translator. The translation norms can be classified as expectancy norms and professional norms, the latter can be further subdivided into accountability norm, communication norm and relation norm.Under the framework of translation norm theory,Chesterman advised a series of operable translation strategies from three levels of syntax, semantics and pragmatics to optimize the translation. In accordance with the actual situation, the translator could adopt well targeted syntactic translation strategies, such as transposition, sentence structure change. In addition, there are semantic strategies such as hyponymy and abstraction change;pragmatic strategies like cultural filtering and visibility change, which can help the target text meet the requirements of expectancy norms and three kinds of professional norms. These norms guide the translator’s decisions in the translation of human science texts and corresponding Chesterman’s translation strategies help the translator to solve difficulties in the process such as handling long sentence structure,so as to accurately maximize the transmission of the meaning of the original text.
