Underland: A Deep Time Journey is the latest work of British writer Robert Mac Farlane.Featuring specific characteristics of documentary literature, this book is all-embracing and mainly introduces what the original author saw and thought in the underground world. While translating documentary literature works,it is required that the translation should not only faithfully convey the information of the source text, but also maintain the literariness of the source language. In addition, the professional terms,culture-loaded words and complex sentences in the source text need demanding efforts in translation task.Given this situation, the translator intends to solve problems in the E-C translation of documentary literary works under the guidance of Chesterman’s translation norm theory.Chesterman’s expectancy norms and professional norms involve higher requirement for translation quality.Aiming to improve the quality of translation,Chesterman suggests specific translation strategies from such aspects as syntax, semantics and pragmatics. In this report, the translator, under the guidance of translation norms, applies translation strategies such as unit shift, concretization and domestication to solve the problems in the process of translation. The cases cited in the report show that Chesterman’s translation norm theory is of guiding significance to the practice of documentary literature translation.
