After Crowley founded the Sorosis in 1868,woman’s clubs sprang up in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At the beginning, woman’s clubs movement was parallel to woman’s suffrage movement. At that time, woman’s clubs built a huge social network among American women, which played a role in uniting women, encouraging and promoting women to enter the public sphere. In order to further expand the role of social reform, woman’s club movement gradually combined with woman’s suffrage movement, thus contributing to the struggle of American women for the right to vote.As the press and publishing center of the United States in the late 19th century,New York City gave birth to the commercial newspaper industry.Driven by interests, the newspaper industry attracted women to work, but failed to provide a reasonable salary and equal employment environment. In the face of gender discrimination and employment inequality, female journalists in urban areas, who entered the public domain earlier, established the club to form a social network especially linked by occupation, which is not only for mutual assistance, but also for communication and discussion. Therefore, the main subject of the paper is the Woman Press Club of New York City, using multidisciplinary research methods like history, urban sociology and journalism, and combined with the club’s minutes, constitution, publications, and historical newspapers and periodical since it was founded in 1889 to 1920,with the background of New York urbanization and transformation of American journalism,,to discuss the female journalists how to try to break through the efforts to fight for their rights in the field of separation of tradition. The paper analyzes the reasons of the establishment of the Woman Press Club of New York City, orders the main activities of the club, explores the process of how the club changed from caring about itself to caring about society and then supporting women’s suffrage movement, and finally discusses the awakening and expression of American women’s female consciousness, and the struggle and compromise of professional women.
