As an important learning concept and learning mode,autonomous learning plays an important part in developing students’ enthusiasm and cultivating students’ autonomous learning ability.National English Curriculum Standards for General High School(2017 edition,2020 revision)has made it clear that the general senior high schools should advocate autonomous learning,emphasize helping students develop good learning habits and develop autonomous learning ability so as to train responsible learners.Relevant researches have focused more on college students,middle and higher vocational students,but there are few investigations on the cultivation of senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability,and the strategies of English teachers to train students’ autonomous learning ability are also worth further discussion.Positive psychology fully embodies the people-oriented thought and attaches importance to people’s needs.It pays attention to students’ positive emotions and experiences,positive personality and positive social environment.Thus it can be seen that autonomous learning is consistent with the idea of positive psychology.Therefore,this thesis investigates the cultivation of senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability from the perspective of positive psychology.In this research,227 students and 5 English teachers from 5 classes of Grade Two in a middle school in Pulandian District,Dalian,were investigated.By using the methods of the questionnaire,interviews and classroom observation,this thesis discusses the cultivation of senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability on three dimensions: learners’ self-managing learning ability,psychology of autonomous learning and autonomous learning behavior.This research attempts to answer the following three questions:(1)the current situation of senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability;(2)the main factors affecting senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability;(3)teachers’ strategies tentatively effective for cultivating senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability in practical English teaching.On the basis of the descriptive statistical analysis of the collected data with SPSS26.0 and EXCEL software,combined with the students’ positive emotions and experiences,positive personality and positive organizational system,the following conclusions can be drawn:(1)Senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability is generally at a medium level.Students have certain English autonomous learning psychology and self-managing learning ability,but they are weak on the dimension of autonomous learning behavior.(2)The factors that affect senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability can be roughly classified into internal and external types.The internal type includes learners’ characteristics,learning beliefs,learning attitudes,learning needs,learning motivation,learning strategies and other factors that related to learners themselves.The external type includes teachers,peer groups,classes and families.(3)In English teaching,teachers can use a variety of strategies to cultivate students’ English autonomous learning ability.For example,teachers lay emphasis on the students’ positive emotions,communicate with students and give feedback,use multimedia software or Situational Language Teaching(SLT)to stimulate students’ interest in learning,and provide a good atmosphere conducive to autonomous learning.Finally,this thesis puts forward some suggestions on cultivating senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability from three aspects:students themselves,English teachers and schools,hoping that with the joint efforts of all parties,students’ autonomous learning ability can be effectively improved and autonomous learners can be cultivated with positive personality,positive emotions and experiences.
