| Thinking quality plays an important role in promoting students’ language learning and language ability.As a language subject,English has a series of characteristics such as stimulating students’ thinking ability and improving their comprehensive quality.Therefore,English teaching is closely related to the students’ thinking ability.New English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools in China(2017)clearly put forward that thinking quality has become an important part of English core competencies.This better shows that the thinking quality not only plays an important parts in English learning and teaching in senior high school,but also plays an important role in the overall development of students.In addition,it also implies that the cultivation of thinking quality has become a universal demands for all students in senior high schools rather than a special development goal for top students.However,in the context of exam-oriented education,teachers neglect the cultivation of students’ thinking quality in teaching practice.The teaching of English knowledge still plays a major role in the teaching of English class in senior high school.The current situation of students’ thinking quality is far from the ideal cultivation objectives.Therefore,it is necessary to investigate the current situation of students’ thinking quality.Based on the theory of Cognitive-developmental theory,the theory of Multiple Intelligences and Lin Chongde’s theory of Intelligence,an investigation is made on a senior high school in Dalian City,Liaoning Province,taking two hundred and fifty students from five classes in Grade One as research subjects,collects and analyzes the data through classroom observations,questionnaires and interviews.The aim of this study is to explore the following three questions:(1)What is the current situation of senior high school students’ English thinking quality?(2)What are the specific aspects of cultivating high school students’ English thinking quality?(3)What are the problems existing in the cultivation of students’ English thinking quality and what are the reasons for these problems?It is found in the research that the overall situation of senior high school students’ thinking quality is not optimistic and they fail to achieve the ideal objectives of thinking quality.Among them,the overall level of students’ critical and creative thinking is lower than their logical thinking,which is mainly reflected in the lack of patience and innovation of most students in the thinking process,and it is difficult to break out of the fixed thinking mode taught by teachers.In English learning,most students do not like open-ended questions,lack initiative and rely too much on teachers.When solving English problems,most students lack comprehensive and rigorous logical thinking.The research is also shown that there are some problems in the cultivation of students’ thinking quality,such as the lack of real English environment;students and teachers pay less attention to thinking quality;teaching activities used by teachers are not comprehensive and rich,most of which are related to English knowledge and have nothing to do with the lack of students’ thinking ability;teaching process is mechanical,the main way is that teachers ask questions and students answer;the evaluation system of cultivating thinking quality is limited,evaluation terms are general.Based on the analysis of the situation and problems,some corresponding suggestions are put forward to improve students’ thinking quality. |
