The English curriculum standard for senior high school(2017 Edition)regards the cultivation of students’ writing ability as one of the objectives of English teaching.However,Although senior high school students have a certain foundation of English learning,there are still many problems in English writing,such as difficulties of analyzing the writing content,poor logic,mistakes of language expression and simple language structures,etc.Therefore,it is of great significance to study the application of Production-Oriented Approach in English writing teaching to help students correctly analyze the writing content,reduce the mistakes of language expression,enrich language structures,and make the writing more logical,so as to improve students’ English writing performance and critical thinking ability.Based on the input theory,output theory and selective learning,the researcher chose 92 students of senior 2 from a senior high school as the participants,used the writing tests,the critical thinking disposition inventory test and the student’s logs as research instruments,and discussed two questions: whether the application of POA can improve senior high school students’ writing performance and whether the application of POA can have an impact on senior high school students’ critical thinking ability.In the experimental class,the researcher designed teaching activities guided by POA in English writing class,which include motivating,enabling and assessing.The teacher should not only cultivate students’ writing ability,but also promote students’ critical thinking ability.Before and after the experiment,the researcher tested the students’ writing ability and critical thinking ability.After the experiment,the data were collected and analyzed by SPSS 22.0 software.The results show that: POA can improve students’ English writing performance,at the same time,students’ critical thinking ability is also improved,including open-mindedness,analytical ability,and systematic ability.The results of this study have implications for the quality of senior high school English teachers when they apply POA to teaching writing.Firstly,teachers need to improve their own critical thinking ability in order to better improve the students’ critical ability.Secondly,applying POA to improving students’ English writing performance requires teachers to have a good understanding and relevant training before using this writing teaching approach.
