| Reading is one of the all-important skills for the learners of English as a foreign language.Students have been bending their efforts to improving their performance in English reading,so have teachers.According to English Curriculum for Secondary Vocational Schools,the English course is aimed to develop the English core competence of the students by learning English language knowledge and improving language skills.Among the goals,the improvement of reading ability deserves particular significance.However,in the teaching of English reading in secondary vocational schools,a great many of teachers pay too much attention to vocabulary,grammar,and other language points,but they ignore the training of reading strategies.Meanwhile,the long-upheld inefficiency of English reading teaching is due to students’ negative attitude towards English learning as well as the lack of motivation and autonomy.Mind mapping,a graphic thinking tool to express divergent thinking,is simple but effective and practical,and it can be applied in fields of study,life,and work.Previous studies have proved that mind mapping contributes to reading strategy training,extracting information from text,and it is conducive to cultivating divergent and critical thinking of the students in primary and secondary schools.However,there is a lack of studies on the application of mind mapping in English reading teaching in secondary vocational education.Therefore,it is necessary to explore the effectiveness of mind mapping in English Reading Teaching in secondary vocational schools.On the basis of schema theory,knowledge visualization theory and related research at home and abroad,this research adopts the methods of literature review,questionnaire survey,teaching experiment and data analysis.The researcher takes the students of two classes in grade 2019 as the participants,who are from Liangzhou Vocational Secondary School in the city of Wuwei,Gansu province and major in computer.Mind mapping is applied to English reading teaching in Class 1,which is the experimental class.In teaching English reading in Class 4,the controlled class,the teacher continues to use the original model of teaching without mind mapping.The data are collected through the questionnaire survey of students’ attitude towards English reading and English reading tests and analyzed by SPSS statistical software to probe into 1)What is the positive effect of mind mapping on the attitude towards English reading for secondary vocational education students? 2.Can the application of mind mapping to English reading teaching improve the English reading test scores of secondary vocational education students? The results show 1)Reading English assisted by mind mapping has a positive effect on the attitude towards English reading for secondary vocational education students;Mind mapping can improve students’ interest in English reading;Mind mapping can help students to understand the structure and content of English reading passages and learn the language knowledge more easily;In addition,mind mapping can enhance students’ awareness of English reading strategies,which improves reading efficiency.2)The application of mind mapping in English reading teaching can raise the scores of English reading test for secondary vocational education students.The scores of reading questions such as “judgment and reasoning”,“logical structure of the text”,“general idea of the text”,“author’s intention and attitude” increase significantly. |
