Representation Of Rhetoric Effect In Translating The Documentary Fiction

This translation practice report is on the basis of translating the documentary fiction The Giver of Stars from the preface to chapter 3.The source text,based on the actual event of The Pack Horse Library Project during the Great Depression,tells us a touching story about five brave women who rode through the mountains of Kentucky in order to send books to women and children there.As a documentary fiction,the source text features authenticity and fictionality.The author used abundant figures of speech to describe the true story,making the characters and the plots more vivid.Therefore,the main challenge in the translation practice is to represent the rhetoric effect of the source text without losing its features as a documentary fiction.Based on such difficulty,this report aims to analyze translation problems related to figures of speech from two parts: lexical figures of speech and structural figures of speech.The former includes personification,metonymy and metaphor,and the latter includes antithesis and parallelism.By selecting and analyzing the typical cases,this report explores different translation strategies,methods and skills to solve such problems.For the lexical figures of speech,this report chooses domestication as the main translation strategy with extension,addition and conversion as translation skills;for the structural figures of speech,this report uses skills such as addition,adjusting the word order and using four-character structure based on literal translation as the method.Through finishing the translation practice,the author has a deep understanding of representing the rhetoric effect in translating the documentary fiction.Hopefully,this report could provide a reference for the translation of relevant text types.
