Study On "The Deep Structure Of Chinese Culture" From The Perspective Of Chinese International Education

The Deep Structure of Chinese Culture by Sun Longji,a Chinese American,gives an in-depth analysis of Chinese culture.From a new perspective,the author tries to analyze the deep structure of Chinese culture reflected by the daily life of Chinese people and some Chinese social phenomena from the standpoint of those who experience and compare Chinese and Western cultures.This paper reviews the interpersonal relationship,the individual personality characteristics of the Chinese people and the ancient Chinese state and society.Sun Longji made an analysis from the "benevolence",the core of Confucianism,and believed that the interpersonal relationship is the concentrated embodiment of Chinese people’s emphasis on "internal and external differentiation",full of "human interest" and maintaining social harmony.However,the over-emphasis on the interpersonal relationship also leads to the fact that the individual personality of the Chinese people is dependent on others and cannot form a complete independent individual,which makes the individual personality of the Chinese people show the characteristics of "being controlled and manipulated",self-compressed and typed.Moreover,the underdeveloped individual personality not only leads to the undevelopment of individuals,but also makes the society unable to achieve long-term progress.However,putting individual emphasis on group relations helps Chinese people to maintain harmonious interpersonal relations.Sun Longji believed that ancient China was an autocratic society.Compared with the democratic system in western countries,the ancient Chinese society was not only politically autocratic,but also the ancient monarch unified and educated the people’s thoughts.Under the authoritarian rule of centralization,the whole society presents the tendency of "great unity","a small utopian society" and "equalitarianism".Sun Longji recognized this kind of autocracy has shortcomings,and pointed out that this is the main reason why modern China lags behind,but he in ancient Chinese society presents the harmony of the situation given the affirmation,this tells us that we should dialectically treat the idea of "unification","a small utopian society" and "equalitarianism" of Chinese society.Different from those who totally negate Chinese culture,Sun Longji tried to evaluate Chinese social phenomena from an objective perspective and reflect on the Chinese culture behind them.He pointed out the shortcomings of the Chinese people and Chinese society,and also saw the excellent moral character of the Chinese people and the essence of Chinese culture that has survived to this day.In fact,he has a bias in understanding some social phenomena in China.The reason is that,with the progress of The Times,Chinese society and some behaviors of Chinese people under modern civilization have been gradually changing.Sun Longji gives examples and discusses from his own experience and observations,which is a kind of empirical demonstration and its research method is not scientific.The Deep Structure of Chinese Culture provides ideas for contemporary Chinese people to reflect on their own culture,and Chinese culture needs to be constantly improved to meet the requirements of contemporary social civilization.At the same time,it also provides enlightenment for the foreign communication of Chinese culture: we should respect the cultural differences,build a good image of China,and spread the culture of civilization and upward.With an open and inclusive mind,we should achieve harmonious coexistence between different cultures.
