| Discourse, which serves as a medium of communication, appears to be significantly important in conveying meaning. This is because any kind of information exchanging is achieved by various forms of discourse. If one wants to learn a language well,a good master of the language mechanism is a necessity.Nowadays,it has been being a trend for more and more people to learn Chinese. As a consequence, knowing both Chinese’s internal mechanism and logical embodiment is what one needs to do before language learning. The source material,The Routledge Handbook of Chinese Discourse Analysis,is a collection of papers on linguistic, covering the latest research achievement on the Chinese discourse. This report is mainly responsible for three parts,Part 5 to Part 7,15 chapters included in all, that is,from chapter 16 to chapter 30.This section mainly includes Chinese discourse analysis in the business communication,in the classroom,in the workplace and so on.By analyzing and comparing every sentence in this section, the author comes to realize that these papers generally have one thing in common, that is,with the usage of the attributive clauses, adverbial clauses and so on,the sentences in these papers are mostly as long as at least 20 words, which makes it not that easy to understand and translate the source material.Taking that into consideration, the author defines these sentences as long and complex sentences and decides the writing direction as how to translate them into Chinese. The fact that English and Chinese greatly differ from each other accounts for the difficulty in the process of translation practice. Therefore, during the translation process, especially when translating the informative materials, such as the linguistic text, translators can neither completely copy the original word orders in the source material nor translate at will. What needs to be done is some suitable adjustment so that the target text can match the Chinese expression modes. From this point of view,a suitable theory to guide this practice is fairly necessary. After some researches, the author finds that the Translation Variation Theory can meet this requirement. This report consists of six parts.A brief description of the translation practice is shown in the first part, and the first part also covers the background information of both the author and the papers. In the second part, the author shows pre-translation preparation, translation process and post-translation proofreading, which are also the indispensable procedures during any translation practice. An overview of the Translation Variation Theory, including its background, its use standard, its application scope and the modification methods,is introduced in the third part. This part also shows how this theory can guide the translation process. In the fourth part, there is a brief introduction of the obstacles appearing during the translation practice and in this part, the author makes an attempt to give a definition of long and complex sentences.Under the guidance of the Translation Variation Theory, the author gives some case analysis in the fifth part, which is also the core content of this report. This part shows how to use four of the modification methods—addition, omission, edition and revision—to make sure the faithfulness to the source material while achieving smooth in the target language from the word, phrase and sentence level. The final part is about what have been achieved through this translation and what can be done better in the future practice. |
