For a long time,reading teaching has been one of the important parts of high school English teaching.However,nowadays a lot of senior high school English reading teaching only focuses on the surface meaning of the text.Some teachers pay too much attention to grammar,vocabulary and sentence patterns in the text,but neglecting the themes of the article and the author’s attitude,as well as the cultivation of students’ reading ability and the improvement of their thinking quality.After reading a lot of literature works,the writer of the thesis finds that there are abundant researches on appraisal theory and reading teaching at home and abroad.But there are few empirical studies applying appraisal theory to English reading teaching in high schools.Therefore,the purpose of this study is to explore the application of the appraisal theory attitude system in high school English reading teaching from the perspective of New Curriculum Standard,and tries to answer the following questions:(1)Can the reading teaching method guided by the appraisal theory attitude system improve the reading score of senior high school students?(2)Can the reading teaching method guided by the appraisal theory attitude system improve the ability of senior high school students to find the hidden lines of the theme?(3)Can the reading teaching method guided by the appraisal theory attitude system improve the reading enthusiasm of senior high school students?Based on the appraisal theory and constructivism theory,the writer of the thesis selected two parallel classes(15 and 18)in Grade Two from Quanzhou No.7 High School.The writer of the thesis carried on the English reading teaching based on the appraisal theory attitude system in the experimental class.On the contrary,the traditional grammar translation teaching method was applied in the controlled class.At the end of the experiment,the writer of the thesis used SPSS 25.0 as well as Wenjuanxing Software to process the experimental data,and found the following research findings:(1)Compared with the controlled class,students in the experimental class improved their reading scores significantly.Therefore,the reading teaching method under the guidance of appraisal theory attitude system is very helpful to improve students’ reading score.(2)The results of the questionnaire and interviews show that most students are troubled by the questions related to themes in reading comprehension.Nevertheless,by using the reading method under the guidance of the appraisal theory attitude system,students can find the context of the article,the hidden lines of the theme and the author’s points of view quickly and accurately.(3)The results of the interviews indicate that the reading teaching method under the guidance of the appraisal theory attitude system is conducive to improving students’ participation and reading interest.To sum up,the reading teaching method under the guidance of appraisal theory attitude system is meaningful and effective.However,due to the limitations of experimental scale and time,there are still many shortcomings should be improved in this study.It is hoped that this study can provide some references for senior high school English reading teaching during the curriculum reform.
