A Study On Evolution Of American Women’s Attitudes Toward Marital Infidelity In Why Women Kill From The Perspective Of Ethical Literary Criticism

Marriage is the basic unit in family which is the beginning of all human beings’ activities in society.And as the basic unit of society,the loyalty to marriage is the guarantee of a harmonious and happy family.While with the comprehensive development and progress of modern society,it also caused serious damage to the steadiness of society and family,and the marriage ethics of monogamy is subjected to unprecedented impact.The drama Why Women Kill selects the most typical three periods in the United States in the 60 s,80s,and 2019 after the second and third feminist movements in American history.The heroines of different eras had made completely different choices with the deepening of the plot.There were a series of changes in attitudes from the moment they first learned about husband’s infidelity to the moment finally resolved it.However,these attitude changes were not only about their personal choices.The ethical predicament faced by the three protagonists mentioned in the drama were just one of many faced by millions of women in real society.Behind the betrayal of men,hidden in the depths has been the oppression and discrimination of the whole society towards women.Through this principal contradiction in the drama,it presents the evolution of American women’s independent consciousness and the awakening of ideological consciousness in details.It is still the road to equality between men and women without distinction.This enlightens contemporary women to make correct ethical choices suitable for their own development,establish the concept of marriage in the new era and maintain a happy marital life.The thesis is mainly divided into five chapters for discussion.Chapter one briefly introduces the research background and significance of the paper as well as the structure and research methods of the paper.Chapter two is a literature review based on the research of domestic and foreign scholars.Chapter three summarizes the ethical literary criticism and gives a brief introduction to the drama Why Women Kill.Chapter four studies the evolution process of American women’s attitude based on the drama and theory.Chapter five summarizes the above.By studying the evolution process of American women’s attitude towards marital infidelity,it reveals that contemporary women should make the right ethical choices in the face of various problems in marital life and maintain a happy marital life.
