According to the requirements of New English Curriculum Standards for Primary School(2011),the maintaining of the students interest is very important.Many primary schools pay much attention to the happy teaching.As a common teaching method,Games are widely used in primary school English teaching.The period of senior grades in primary school is of vital significance for children’s study and developing.During the critical period,cultivating and maintaining of students’ learning interest are very important.What the thesis concerns is a study on the application of Games in senior English teaching in primary schools.In order to investigate the current situation of the application of games in senior English teaching in primary schools,this paper takes up the learning by doing theory as theoretical framework and use classroom observation,questionnaire and interview to summarize the types of games applied in primary school senior grades English teaching and students’ responses including their attitude,participation degree and interest in different games and also to investigate the achievement of teaching goal in different games.The author hopes that the investigation can provide some reference for the front-line primary school senior grades English teachers to choose and construct effective game teaching methods in their English teaching.The research is designed to answer the following two questions:1.What are the major types of games primary school senior grades English teachers choose to use?2.What are students’ responses to different types of games used in primary school senior grades English teaching?The subjects of the research are chosen from three primary schools.They are Pi zhou Experimental Primary School,Tongshan Experimental Primary School and Xuzhou Experimental Primary school.In order to investigate the current situation of the application of games in senior English teaching in primary schools.Questionnaires are designed to hand out to 100 students in Pi zhou Primary School,105 students in Tongshan Experimental school and also 110 students in Xuzhou Experimental school.Also,12 teachers are chosen from the three schools to carry out interview.Four senior grades English teachers are selected from each school.Besides,in order to get more direct materials for the research,Classes One,Grade Five and Class Five,Grade Six in Pizhou Experimental Primary School are selected to conduct class observation.The data analysis generates the following findings:Firstly,there are four major types applied in primary school senior grades English class.They are imagine games like guessing games,performance games like role-play games,competitive games and cooperative games.Secondly,high-grade primary school students are willing to take an active part in imagine games,competitive games and cooperative games.The competition games are their favorite games.However,performance games are not welcomed by them.They are not interested in playing performance games.Thirdly,Students can learn a lot through playing imagine games and competition games,however,they can not learn much through performance games and cooperative games.Therefore,when primary school English teachers choose or design games,they should not only take the teaching content and teaching goals into consideration,but also consider the actual situation of students including their willing,attitude,participation in different kinds of games in class.
