Jews in the Middle Ages lived through a "golden age" in the Islamic world, but in the Maghreb, the situation of Jews was much worse than in other Islamic places. The Islamic Conquest brought a brief peace to the Maghreb Jews, but as the national and religious situation changed, the fate of the Maghreb Jews became uncertain. The paper aims to analyze the causes of local anti-Semitic persecution and the reasons for its high frequency through the historical analysis of the Maghreb, and to explore whether there is anti-Semitism in the European sense in the Medieval Islamic World or not. Therefore, this paper will be divided into four chapters. The first chapter deals mainly with the religious and ethnic composition of the Maghreb before and after the Islamic Conquest, and the history of the Jews before the Conquest. It is proved that the Islamic Conquest changed the religious and ethnic composition of the Maghreb, thus formed the relative binary relationship of JewishMuslim. The second part depicts the situation after the Islamic Conquest of the Maghreb. After the establishment of the principle of Jewish-Muslim coexistence through the Pact of ‘Umar. The author points out the prominence of the anti-Jewish in Maghreb, and then finds out that the Maghreb anti-Jewish persecution happened in politics, religion, economy and daily life. The third chapter demonstrates the reasons for the frequent occurrence of antiJewish persecution in Maghreb society. The author holds the opinion that it’s due to the "master-servant relationship" established by the Pact of ‘Umar leaving the Jews in vulnerability;Maghreb’s geopolitical factor making its political situation difficult to stabilize;and Jews’ being the only alien in the local society. The fourth part summarizes the characteristics of the local anti-Jewish based on the Maghreb’s anti-Jewish persecutions and compares it with the contemporary antiSemitism in the European Christian world, and then discusses whether anti-Semitism happened in the Medieval Islamic world or not.
