The source text that is a kind of scientific and technological texts and shows the features of scientific and technological texts is the part of the Research on the Carbon Neutralization of Scraped Vehicle Metal Recycling in X country.A large number of non-subject sentences appear in the source text,which causes no difficulty in understanding their meaning.However,according to the English grammar,the structural integrity of a sentence is highly important in English.The subject is the essential part of a sentence.Only with subject can a sentence be complete and comprehensible.It is absolutely important to enable the foreign readers to understand these non-subject sentences accurately,objectively and concisely.Therefore,the paper selects the non-subject sentences as the research target of case analysis.Firstly,the paper identifies the non-subject sentences before translation practice.In Chinese language,non-subject sentences are the sentence where the subject is emitted or vacant and whose the meaning is comprehensible even without a certain context.Then,the paper classifies the non-subject sentences.Concisely,they can be divided into three types,which include subject-less sentence,subject-shifted sentence and subject-emitted sentence.The subject-less sentence means that its subject is vacant in the sense of grammar and can hardly be determined;the subject-omitted sentence means that its subject is emitted in the sense of pragmatics and can be determined according to the context;the subject-shifted sentence means that its subject shifts to other positions in the surface structure,which usually shifts to the object.Based on the specific cases,different strategies have been suggested.For the subject-less sentence,the passive voice is a common method.Also,it is advisable to adopt “there+be” and “it+be+adj+definitive” under some conditions;for the subject-omitted sentence,adding the real subject and using the passive voice are the common methods;for the subject-shifted sentence,restoring the subject and using the passive voice are the main methods.The paper is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is the task description,which includes the background,purpose and significance of the task;the second chapter is the translation process,which includes pre-translation,while-translation and after-translation;the third chapter is the translation theory,which includes the origin,development,introduction and guidance significance of the Catford’s translation shift theory;the fourth chapter is the case analysis,which is divided into three parts;the final chapter is summary,which includes the findings,limitation and suggestion of this paper.In a word,the translation report is a beneficial attempt that the Catford’s translation shift theory is applied in the translation of scientific and technological texts.
