Translation Strategies For Participle Constructions From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Theory

The translator selects the Introduction as well as Chapter One to Three in Part I from The Cambridge Handbook of Cognitive Linguistics as the translation material.The book covers the main concepts,approaches and methodologies used in cognitive linguistics and shows the results of the interaction between cognitive linguists and other scholars researching languages.The source text is a social science text and it requires clear semantics,concise expressions,and compact structures so as to convey information more objectively and accurately.The selected parts contain a large number of participle constructions and their structures are complex and involve the change of tense and voice,which brings a lot of difficulties to translation.Communicative Translation Theory was put forward by the famous English linguist Newmark and the theory involved two translation approaches: communicative translation and semantic translation.Communicative translation attempts to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original.Thus,it is necessary to adjust the target text according to the understanding and reaction of the readers.According to the characteristics of social science texts,the translator makes some adjustments to participle constructions when translating.From the perspective of Communicative Translation Theory,this report discusses the translation of participle constructions through specific examples and summarizes some translation strategies,such as conversion,amplification and inversion and so on,and hopes to help the readers better understand the original.This report is divided into six chapters.The first two chapters introduce the translation task and translation processes.Chapter three gives a brief introduction to Communicative Translation Theory and chapter four collects the participle constructions in the source text and divides them into three types: participle construction as attributives,participle construction as adverbials and participle construction as object complements.Chapter five is the case analysis.Under the guidance of Communicative Translation Theory,the translator puts forward different translation strategies for different types of participle constructions.The last chapter summarizes the findings and limitations in this translation report.
