The text type of Report on Doctoral Education Reform belongs to social science text.The report describes the doctoral education reform measures from 1990 to 2015 in the United States,objective evaluation of the previous reform achievements,limitations and suggestions for the future development of doctoral education.A large number of long sentences are used in the Report on Doctoral Education Reform,where the syntactic structure is complex and a large amount of information is contained.Communicative translation theory emphasizes that the translation should meet the reading needs of the target language readers and conform to the norms of the target language,which solves the translation problem of long sentences in social science text to a certain extent.Therefore,the translator uses Newmark’s communicative translation theory as the theoretical guidance of long sentences translation and combines the methods of long sentences translation in English,so that the translator can deal with the translation of long sentences in social science text,accurately convey the original information and improve the quality of translation.This report is composed of five chapters.Chapter One gives an introduction to language characteristics of social science text,background and significance of the research.Chapter Two describes the procedures of translation.Namely,preparations before translation,translation process and proofreading after translation.Chapter Three is the theoretical frame,which illustrates the definition of long sentences in English,Newmark’s communicative translation theory and the applicability of the theory to the translation of long sentences.Chapter Four is the case study,in which translation strategies are discussed with specific examples.To meet the target language readers’ needs,such strategies as adding,inserting,sequencing and recasting are adopted.To conform to the norms of the target language,strategies such as embedding,cutting,splitting,integrating are used.Chapter Five is a summary of the whole report,including the findings and limitations of this translation practice.
