Zhao Yuanzhen And Education In Modern Gansu

Since modern times,Gansu has been in a backward state for a long time because of its closed geographical environment.Modern education also started late,with the first batch of international students as late as the early 20 th century,and the number of international students is small,with a single destination.In this paper,Zhao Yuanzhen,the first doctor studying in the United States in Gansu Province,is taken as the research object.Through the study of his study experience and educational career in Gansu,the author hopes to deepen his understanding of the social transformation in modern Gansu and enrich the study of the educational history in modern Gansu.Zhao Yuanzhen was born in poverty,and her family suffered misfortune,but she still insisted on studying.Taking Zhao Yuanzhen’s study growth as a clue,this paper investigates his hard study experience in Lanzhou and Beijing.Gansu had no official fee to study in the United States,but Zhao Yuanzhen applied for the qualification to study in the United States,and he became the first doctor to study in the United States in modern Gansu.Zhao Yuanzhen wanted to set up mining after returning to Gansu,but by chance he became the director of education.The post of Director of Education was held twice before and after,and both of them were short-lived,which should be chosen according to the political needs of the bureau.However,Zhao Yuanzhen served Gansu education conscientiously.During his tenure,he quelled the academic tide,ran publications and reformed the new academic system,which made outstanding contributions to Gansu education.In order to set up Gansu Mining,Zhao Yuanzhen decided to start vocational education by training miners.The Institute for Fostering Miners founded with the support of warlords and the political situation in Gansu Province.Frustrated in his official career,Zhao Yuanzhen decided to stay away from politics and realize the ideal of saving the country through education.There are many difficulties in developing private middle schools in backward areas with unstable political situation and frequent wars.The problems of funds,interference from external forces and expansion of school buildings constantly interfere with normal educational activities.However,Zhao Yuanzhen persisted in running a school and solved the difficulties through various means,and finally built the private Zhiguo Middle School into the middle school with the largest number in Gansu at the beginning of liberation,enjoying a good reputation in Longyuan.In order to better realize the ideal of saving the nation through education,Zhao Yuanzhen planned to organize Zhiguo College,which ended in war.Zhao Yuanzhen’s life course is consistent with the development of modern Gansu education.He studied at the first new school in Gansu,and later became the first person to study in Europe and America in Gansu.Zhao Yuanzhen,who returned to Gansu after studying abroad,reformed the new academic system and founded educational publications,which greatly promoted the development of education in Gansu.The establishment of vocational education and private middle schools has trained a large number of talents for the development of Gansu.Zhao Yuanzhen’s personal destiny has always been linked with the modernization of Gansu education,and Zhao Yuanzhen’s life is the epitome of Gansu’s modern social transformation.
