Translation Strategies For The Passive Voice Structure From The Perspective Of Translation Shift Theory

The translation materials of this translation practice are from Digital Renaissance,which belongs to the social science texts and endeavors to explore the impact of digitization on the culture industry.It involves a large number of professional terms,with plain and objective language and accurate information expression,and many passive voice structures.Sentences with passive voice structures are usually complicated in structure,which is a major difficulty in translation.Therefore,the translator probes into the translation of the passive voice structure,and summarize the practical translation strategies.The concept of “translation shifts” was first formally put forward by the British translation theorist,Catford.From the linguistic point of view,he summed up the types of translation shifts at sentence level and other levels below it,and explained the applicability of translation shifts in translation practice.Due to the complexity of the passive voice structure,the choice of subject and the adjustment of word order in translation often puzzle the translator.In view of the fact that the flexibility of Translation Shift Theory can help to solve these problems,and therefore,the translator decides to use Translation Shift Theory to guide the translation practice.Based on the translation examples in translation practice,this translation practice report makes an analysis in detail about how to apply Catford’s Translation Shift Theory to the passive voice structure translation from the following three aspects,i.e.,structure shifts,class shifts and unit shifts,so as to guide the subject selection in the translation of the passive voice structure,and to explore the applicability of this theory in the practice of the passive voice structure translation.This translation practice report is mainly divided into five chapters: the first chapter is the introduction of translation projects;the second chapter is the translation process;the third chapter briefly introduces the theoretical framework,including Translation Shift Theory and the passive voice structure;the fourth chapter from the perspective of Translation Shift Theory conducts a case study and probes into the following translation strategies for the passive voice structure,namely converting the passive voice structure into the active voice structure and the invisible passive voice structure through structural shifts,converting the passive voice structure into the noun,adjective and preposition through class shifts,and converting the passive voice structure into the idiom and clause through unit shifts;the fifth chapter summarizes the translation practice,points out the achievements and shortcomings in the process of translation,in order to provide some help for future research.
