| The National English curriculum standards for senior high schools issued by Ministry of Education in 2017 promote “Perspective of Activity-based Learning”(the Perspective)to develop core literacy. This is the focus of the new curriculum standard revision currently undertaken. The Perspective provides important guidance for teachers to explore effective ways of teaching and learning.Senior high school English teachers’ awareness and implementation of the Perspective translate directly into the effective development of classroom activities and are highly relevant to the new round of curriculum reform. The study utilizes questionnaires, classroom observation, and interviews with English teachers from four senior high schools in Hainan province to investigate English reading instruction, with the aim of answering the following questions:1.How do English teachers perceive the Perspective?2.What is the current situation of their reading instruction based on the Perspective?3.What difficulties do they encounter in implementing the Perspective? What support and assistance do they need? The study concludes that, firstly, the vast majority of senior high school English teachers are fully aware of the Perspective, with only a few in need of adjusting their teaching approach;secondly,English teachers attach importance to the development of learning comprehension and application practice activities in reading activities, but tend to ignore development of innovative activities;and thirdly, when teachers use the Perspective, they may find it challenging to implement the concept for lack of sufficient guidance. The results of this study can not only help teachers understand their own needs in terms of relevant theoretical and practical knowledge, but also provide decision-makers and curriculum experts with valuable insight into teachers’ current practice. |
