| Sponsored by WorldSkills International(WSI)and hailed as the“Skill Olympics”,the WorldSkills Competition(WSC)is a platform for technician elites with the best vocational skills.In 2019,the author was nominated by the Ministry of Human Resource and Social Security as the WorldSkills interpreter for Electrical Installations at the 45thWSC,helping team China win the gold medal in Kazan,Russia.The expert seminar herein was held during the team’s preparation for the 45thWSC.Given that the skill is highly professional,while facilitating external communication and competitor training with his linguistic capacity,two types of challenges stand out.First,intelligence challenges including linguistic and interpreting skills;second,non-intelligence challenges represented by cross-cultural communication.This report is a holistic review and reflection on author’s interpretation based on his two-year MTI learning.In this report,challenges and solutions in the author’s practice are analyzed by means of case study and theoretical research,and ways to enhance interpreting and interpreter competence are thus proposed.Initially,the duties of a WorldSkills interpreter;participants and features of the seminar are described.Second,the interpretation process and challenges are reviewed,namely“multi-role and multi-tasking,terms and long and complex sentences and cross-cultural communication”.Furthermore,corresponding solutions are proposed:“role coordination,ELK-based preparation and cross-cultural competence improvement”.In addition,framed with Prof.Wang Binhua’s“Interpreting Competence and Interpreter Competence Theory”,two conclusions are drawn in the report via analyzing challenges and solutions in the practice:(1)ELK as an intelligence factor can cement interpreting competence via facilitating interpreter’s comprehension;cross-cultural competence as a non-intelligence factor can enhance interpreter’s professional qualities via advancing coordination and adaptation,thus further consolidating interpreter competence.(2)Intelligence and non-intelligence factors can serve as the orientation for interpreting training and preparation to improve interpreter’s overall capacity and interpreting performance.The report is a reflection of author’s work as a WorldSkills interpreter based on the“Interpreting Competence and Interpreter Competence Theory”,marking a positive attempt for studies in this regard.Furthermore,it may also serve as an evidence for related theoretical development and reference for interpreting learners hereafter. |
