A Report On The Translation Of Contract Law Under The Guidance Of Static Equivalence Theory

Britain is the first choice of direct investment for Chines businesses.From January to June 2020,the total amount of Chinese direct investment in the UK reached $426 million,up by 78% from a year earlier.More than 500 Chinese businesses have came to UK so far,which will be continuously on the rise in the future,but trade friction is still an inevitable problem encountered by Chinese enterprises.Contract laws are the legal foundation for the economic relationship between two parties.Therefore,Contract Law of Britain is translated in order to help domestic enterprises avoid and deal with trade friction.The Contract Law,published by Routledge,reflects the law as of June 1,2016.It quotes legal provisions and typical cases to explain the current British contract law,so as to help students understand and apply legal knowledge.Based on its linguistic features and the translator’s competence,the translation criteria of this project are determined as accuracy,equivalence,consistency and conciseness.Accordingly,the translator has adopted corresponding strategies to deal with the difficulties in lexical,syntactic and textual aspects under the guidance of static equivalence theory by Prof.Li in 2010.In this report,the translator summarizes translating strategies for common vocabulary with legal meaning,synonyms and absence of equivalent words at lexical level.In terms of syntactic difficulties,the grammatical and operative analysis are chosen to reach static equivalence of long-and-complicated sentences,and the voice of the sentence is transformed based on the context to deal with legal provisions and interpretations with passive voice.Meanwhile,the translator keeps the format of the source text and reserves each table,diagram and flowchart,as well as adopts an unified translation for fixed sentence patterns with high rate of repetition,which helps to achieve the coherence and cohesion of discourse.The translator aims to provide reference for legal translation research and further promote the development of legal translation through this project.
