A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Self-Driven Child

In recent years,with the rising living standard,children’s living conditions and educational environment are more and more superior,but their psychological problems are emerging.In this context,the translator decides to translate The Self-Driven Child,which aims to instruct parents to guide their children to have healthy self-control.The report is guided by Newmark’s theory of communicative translation.The source text belongs to informative text.The translator studies from three aspects on the basis of the theory: lexical translation,syntactic translation and textual translation.At the lexical level,for transmitting the source meaning,literal translation is adopted when translating terminologies and abbreviations.As for the words that could cause reading obstacles,and the words that need to be converted,the translator uses free translation to avoid mechanical translation,improving the readability of the target text.At the syntactic level,extension of word meaning is adopted to deal with the translation of summative short sentence;on account of different mood of imperative sentence,such as suggestion,request and forbidden,translation by mood is selected,so as to let the target readers read books just like being the original readers;direct speech sentence includes parents’ opinions or questions,and dialogues between characters.It adopts change of text style,and tries to make the translation natural and smooth on the basis of respecting the readers’ language habits and cultural background.At the textual level,translation strategies are adopted,such as addition,omission,inversion and co-translation,to ensure that the target text is cohesive and coherent.According to case analysis,the translation theory the translator used can be able to instruct the translation of psychological texts.The translation of the text can provide more educational ideas for Chinese parents,and provide some references for translators of psychological texts.
