This article analyzes the development of theatricality and its concepts and characteristics to let readers understand the conceptual development of "theatricality." It was first used in art by Michael Fred in his "Art and Art" in 1967.The term’theatricality’was put forward in "Objectiveness" to criticize the "objectiveness" in minimalism. From some concepts,I analyzed that theatricality has the characteristics of comprehensiveness,on-siteness and media. And emphatically analyzes the way of expression of "theatricality" in painting creation, which has the characteristics of multiple narratives, sense of ritual and metonymy.Through the mastery of these characteristics and the analysis of examples, first through the comparative analysis of the multiple narratives in Bosch’s "Early Paradise" and Gu Kaizhi’s "Fu of Luo Shen",it is found that there are different methods for the use of multiple narratives in painting. In particular, the structure of the screen and the arrangement of characters in "Fu of Luo Shen" to the scroll-like display method are full of a static theater feeling.Later,I took Michelangelo’s "Genesis Murals" and Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes 257 Caves as examples to analyze the construction of the sense of ritual, and concluded that their advantage in theatrical painting lies in the setting of the pictures and its It presents the locality and sense of the scene of the space, and paintings in this space can bring more feelings to everyone, and they have different ways of processing the composition of the picture, which can increase our understanding of the form to a certain extent.Sensitive sensitivity. Then we analyzed Chen Hongshou’s "Yin Mei Tu" and Kentridge’s works in the Ming Dynasty, and found that Chen Hongshou focused on personal theater expression and adopted a small narrative style, focusing on personal emotions. The content refers to one’s inner emotions through the image of the characters on the screen. And Kentridge’s work has a form of humanistic care and a social theater in it,like a social painting theater, full of realistic humanistic care, based on experiences in real life, with a peaceful presence.Sense, communicate with the viewer, and metaphor a kind of social reality through changing images. After that, through reflection and introduction to some theater paintings in my own creations, and an introduction to the images, colors, forms, techniques, etc.in my works,I added some current painting cases to theater paintings. It also allowed me to sort out the development context of my painting creation, enrich the creation logic and creation methods of my works, and at the same time reflect on myself. In the final conclusion,I concluded that “theatricality” painting has a kind of openness, which I think is the core point of theatrical painting.
