A Report On C-E Translation Of Reviewing The History Of Artistic Thought:An Empirical Study Of Lijiang School Of Painting(Excerpts)

This translation report was finished on the basis of Chinese-English translation practice.For the translation practice,the source text was excerpted from the first and the second articles in the book Reviewing the History of Artistic Thought: An Empirical Study Involving Lijiang School compiled by Jian Shengyu,and it contains a total of 13788 words.Jian Shengyu respectively analyzed the spirits and concepts of Huang Gesheng and Wei Junping,who are two representatives of Lijiang School.For Lijiang School which is a school of painting belonging to the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,the painters of it not only paint the landscape of Guangxi,but also paint local people in Guangxi.Their paintings show their sincerity to their hometown.Although tradit ional Chinese painting is the main part of Lijiang School,the painters have continuously innovated to make Lijiang School take the Chinese tradition as its cornerstone and show the spirits and outlook of the new era.English translations of relevant articles about Lijiang School will undoubtedly promote Chinese cultures in the world and help foreigners know Lijiang School better.Rewriting theory put forward by Andre Lefevere was chosen as the guiding theory of this report.Rewriting theory belongs to “Manipulation School”.In Lefevere’s opinion,there are two main influences on rewriting: one is ideology and the other is poetics.Subjectivity is a necessity for translators in order to make more readers accept the translations.In this report,the influences of ideology and poetics on the translation were analyzed under the current background.At the same time,with the guidance of rewriting theory,the methods of addition,annotation,inversion and division were used by the translator to translate the source text.Finally,the translations were analyzed with rewriting theory.In this report,it was found that different emphases should be paid when translators translate monosyllabic or disyllabic culture-loaded words,polysyllabic culture-loaded words and sentences containing cultures,the emphases of the translations should be different.Therefore,it is necessary to adopt different translation methods.In translation,it can promote the spreading of cultures by taking ideology and historical development into account.There are limitations of this translation practice,such as the lack of accurate translation about art knowledge and the failure to clarify Chinese philosophy thoroughly.How to make translations conform to the source text is a key problem that needs to be considered when translators spread native cultures in the future.
