According to the language skills requirements of the English Curriculum Standards for General Senior High Schools(2017 edition),"Students can critically examine the content of the text,the cultural phenomena involved in the text,and the value orientation,structure and coherence of the text"(Ministry of Education,2018).High school English curriculum standards point out that the overall goal of English teaching is to culture the comprehensive ability of the students,so they can use the language more easily.In the traditional high school English reading teaching,teachers pay more attention to imparting knowledge,while students are passive to receive knowledge,and they are short of critical thinking on knowledge seriously.Class 5 and Class 6 of Grade 2 in XX Middle School are selected as the research objects in this study.A critical teaching mode is carried out in the second semester of the second year of high school in 2020,in order to cultivate students’ critical thinking and improve their reading comprehension ability.Under the premise of the same teachers and textbooks,the control class pays attention to the teaching of grammar and vocabulary,and the teaching methods remain the same,while the experimental class also carries out the teaching of critical reading on the basis of the traditional teaching mode to cultivate students’ critical thinking.After the end of the semester,the scores of the two classes were analyzed before and after the test to check whether there was any difference between the scores of the students in the experimental class and the students in the control class after the experiment.After the experimental teaching and the traditional teaching in the two classes,the test results of the two classes show that the reading scores of the students are improved through the critical English reading teaching,and the students have a deep understanding of the critical reading strategies and can apply them to the reading process consciously.Therefore,the research shows that critical reading can improve students’ awareness of critical thinking,develop their critical thinking ability,and improve their English reading comprehension.Nowadays,critical reading teaching is an effective way to cultivate students’ critical thinking ability.Firstly,it is important to create an atmosphere for thinking,building a harmonious and democratic teacher-student relationship Secondly,it is necessary to choose appropriate teaching reading materials to open students’ thinking.In addition,by making students learn to learn cooperatively,they can cultivate their curiosity.Finally,let the students dare to ask the questions,which can cultivate the awareness of the problem.It will not only stimulate students’ pleasure in learning and encourage them to learn autonomously,but also improve their reading scores and lay a good foundation for subsequent learning.It also presents an example for middle school teachers to learn and refer to in developing critical thinking in English reading teaching,which has certain practical value and is a useful supplement to relevant research on developing critical thinking in critical reading teaching in high school and high school.
