A Report On The Translation Of Good-bye To All That

The source text Good-Bye to All That is a memoir of Robert Graves and it is translated under the guidance of Steiner’s Hermeneutic Translation Theory.The book contains thirty-two chapters,and the first four chapters are taken into this translation report as the source text.This part focuses on the writer’s childhood life,including the anecdotes happened in a traditional boarding school in Britain as well as part of his family life.The linguistic characteristics of this work are popular and informal.In the process of translation,the difficult point is how to express the authenticity of the original work in the target language.Taking the translation of Good-Bye to All That as an example,this practice report introduces how to translate the text of memoir under the guidance of Steiner’s Hermeneutics.According to the four steps of trust,aggression,import and compensation,the report analyzes several typical examples in the original text and introduces the translating process of the original work under the guidance of theory.First of all,it expounds the trust to the source text from different angles.Secondly,it breaks the crust of the text and invades some words and sentences in the book.Thirdly,it adopts the skills of addition,division and so on to excavate deeper into the connotation,which is in order to achieve the purpose of importing the original text.Finally,it compensates the translation from the cultural perspective by adding annotations.Through the analysis of the translation practice of Good-Bye to All That,it is proved that under the guidance of Steiner’s Hermeneutic Theory,the translation of memoirs can basically achieve the goal of delivering the original content to the target readers.This is not only a great help to deepen the translator’s understanding of the theory,but also lays a solid foundation for future translation work.Figure 0;Table 0;Reference 31...
