Researches on English-Chinese dialect translation of literary works, among all translation studies at home and abroad, remain comparatively rare.As English literary works with dialectical elements, which already abound, often stand out in style and expression effects, instrumental in depicting characters, building backdrops, driving plots, highlighting styles and presenting themes, translation of such works ought to enjoy discussion and research to a larger extent.Recent decades have ushered in quite a few studies in this regard, however,in general, systematic researches featuring Scottish-dialect translation strategies of English literary works are yet to come.Based on the English-Chinese translation of Shuggie Bain,a Booker-prize winner, this report analyzes the application of "foregrounding" in the literary translation of English dialects. The above-mentioned work, with typical phonetic, lexical, register and grammatical characteristics of Scottish Dialect, contains myriad words and phrases in Scottish Dialect coupled with literary, religious, historical and cultural elements against the backdrop of Glasgow,Scotland.Hence,in such a translation, the representation of the cultural elements in this very dialect and the explanation of the context is of paramount importance.Armed with the unique perspectives of foregrounding proposed by Leech,Halliday and beyond, guided by the dialect translation strategies by Han Ziman and other scholars, with phonological, lexical, register and grammatical foregrounding, the four prominent types of foregrounding in the source text, this report summarizes four specific translation strategies, namely, colloquial and idiomatic translation,general-dialect translation, addition of interjections and apostrophes and grammatical simplification, comparatively plausible in the Chinese translation of English literature with Scottish dialects.Hence,it is hoped that this report could offer some,if any, referential value for the Chinese translation of Scottish dialect in English literary works.
