| Summary writing,as a compound task of “reading + writing”,puts forward higher requirements for students’ integral ability of language expression,organization,and thinking.Both teachers and students find it a demanding and complex writing task.According to college entrance examination reform,it is of practical significance to explore the practicability of combined reading-writing approach to the teaching of English summary writing for senior high school students.Based on the theoretical research of domestic and foreign scholars and by taking the sophomores of Shuguang senior high school as the research subjects,this paper makes a comparative experiment on two summary writing teaching modes in two classes,aiming to clarify the relationship between reading and summary writing,and demonstrate the effectiveness of the application of combined reading-writing approach.It is intended to help students improve students’ summary writing skills through reading.After the five-month classroom teaching experiment,the survey results and experimental data are collected and analyzed.The following findings are obtained:(1)not only do students have a clear idea of the criteria of summary writing,but also can analyze the reading materials by using discourse knowledge and complete a summary writing.Meanwhile,they also pay attention to the use of connectives and flexible language expression in writing.(2)This approach is recognized by students with different English levels,the majority of whom have formed a good habit of discussing and analyzing reading materials with their classmates.(3)Students’ reading and writing ability are significantly enhanced.Combined reading-writing approach has some implications on the future teaching of summary writing:(1)to effectively combine the approach with daily teaching,teachers should select the reading materials with particular text characteristics as sources of summary writing exercises.(2)In the process of teaching,teachers should pay equal attention to the explanation of vocabulary,the analysis of long and difficult sentences,and strengthening the development of students’ interpretation strategies.(3)Well-arranged teaching activities are required.In a word,it is found that combined reading-writing approach has a positive impact on the students’ summary writing ability. |
