| Reading is one of the major language input in English learning,and an indispensable part of English learning.The cultivation of high school students’ reading abilities has always been one focus of high school English teaching.Faced with the reformation in the College Entrance Examination,the traditional model of English reading teaching is not satisfying.Therefore,the scholars have been paying attention to the study of reading literacy,and argued that reading literacy would be of great importance to English reading teaching.In recent years,the experts have been paying attention to and promoting the research on the influence of sustained silent reading(SSR)on students’ reading literacy,and have made great achievements.They point out that sustained silent reading is an effective method to improve students’ reading literacy.Sustained silent reading means that teachers and students do autonomous silent reading at a specific time every day without interference from other things.The present author plans to choose Grade-10 students as research subjects to explore its influence on high school students’ English reading literacy.This study aims to solve two problems:(1)what are the effects of SSR on reading characters of Grade-10 students’ EFL reading literacy?(2)what are the effects of SSR on reading abilities of Grade-10 students’ EFL reading literacy ?In this study,110 Grade-10 students from two parallel classes of a four-star high school in Huai’an City of Jiangsu Province are selected as the research objects.One is the experiment class(EC)with 54 students;the other is the control class(CC)with 56 students.According to the pre-questionnaire,there is no significant difference in reading characters between the two classes before the experiment.According to the results of their first English test,there is no significant difference in reading abilities between the two classes before the experiment.The results of the post-questionnaire and the second English test after the experiment are used to study the effect of sustained silent reading.The present author also conducts one-to-one semi-structured interview with five randomly selected students to further explore the influence of sustained silent reading.According to the study,sustained silent reading can improve Grade-10 students’ English reading literacy.EC students’ reading characters and reading abilities are improved significantly.Reading characters consist of reading habits and reading experience.Sustained silent reading contributes to enrich students’ reading experience and develop students’ good reading habits.Reading abilities cover reading comprehension and language knowledge use.SSR improves students’ reading comprehension and language knowledge use significantly.Sustained silent reading has a certain referential significance for high school English reading teaching in China.In order to help teachers successfully carry out sustained silent reading activities,the present author gives following suggestions:(1)to carry out sustained silent reading activities to increase the amount of language input.(2)to protect students’ right to choose materials independently and stimulate reading initiative.(3)to demonstrate the behavior of enjoying reading and be willing to share reading experience with students.(4)to design post-reading activities that respect students’ wishes,and emphasize the process in the evaluation of students’ sharing.Finally,there are some limitations in this study,which need to be further improved. |
