A Report On The Translation Of Supplementary Agreement To Guangzhou Real Estate Lease Contract(Excerpt)

This report is based on the C-E translation of the Supplementary Agreement to Guangzhou Real Estate Lease Contract(Excerpt),mainly the principal provisions that the landlord and the tenant reach in the process of conveying the premises.As one of legal texts,the source text(contract)has the characteristics of a normative formal style,professionalism,standardization,solemnity,and seriousness.As for the linguistic features,it is also characterized by abundant fuzzy words,technical terms,and complicated sentences.The report consists of four chapters in total.Chapter One is the task description in which the source text,the significance of the project,and the difficulties of translation are introduced.Chapter Two provides an overall view of the preparation,while-translating,and quality control along the completion of the project.In Chapter Three,the translator thoroughly analyzes the difficulties,including fuzzy words,nominalization,and implied contextual information with the illustration of a variety of text examples.With regard to the translation of fuzzy words,the translator provides literal translation and liberal translation,taking account of the semantic and legal functions.In view of the characteristic of nominalization in legal English,nominalization is used as a translation technique to explore the structure of legal Chinese that should be nominalized.For the translation of contextual information,addition and combination are adopted to reveal the implied information.In Chapter Four,the translator’s reflections,the limitations of the project,and suggestions for further studies are summed up.Through the translation practice,the translator has not only deepened her knowledge in law and language but also improved her skill in contract translation.The translation report intends to report how the translator tackles the difficulties encountered in the translation process,and provide possible assistance for other fellow translators in the translation of real estate lease contracts.
