The Multidimensional Research On "Wei+O+VP" Structure

The importance of prepositions is self-evidence in the word-class system of Chinese.Prepositional as a type of relatively closed part of speech are numbered and cannot be used alone,but prepositional phrases or prepositional structures are used frequently in the real world.And because of this,the usage of prepositions is complex.For example,a preposition has many kinds of introduction functions,and different prepositions often appear in the same structure to perform the same function.The research object of this paper is the ―wei + O + VP‖ structure,which is the preposition structure that appears frequently in Chinese corpus.In the study of grammaticalization from the diachronic dimension,Wei is one of the prepositions which results from the early grammaticalization of verbs.The structure of "wei + O + VP" is the basic structure to judge the preposition attribute of Wei,which also plays an important role in analyzing the generation,evolution and specific use of Preposition Wei.On the basis of modern Chinese corpus,the structure of "wei + O + VP" shows its special characteristics and tendencies on usage.The purpose of this paper is to make a comprehensive analysis and summary of the emergence,development and specific use of "wei + O + VP" structure.Combined with the concept of "subject",the "wei + O + VP" structure is widely linked with some aspects of human and social facts.This paper is mainly divided into five parts.The part of the introduction briefly point out the objects,the significance of the research,as well as the research methods and the source of the corpus.The first part details the current situation and related issues of the research around the research object,and further explained the theoretical basis of the thesis.The analysis of the "wei + O + VP" structure in diachronic dimension is based on ancient Chinese corpora.First,by summarizing the usage characteristics of the verb Wei and comparing different scholars’ views on the generation of Preposition Wei,This paper expounds the formation of "wei + O + VP" structure,and explores the causes from the internal syntactic and external pragmatic dimensions.The specific analysis involves the redefinition of related corpus.Secondly,according to the initial meaning of the structure,we sort out the evolution and usage of the "predicate","prepositional object",and "subject" in this structure,and redefine the controversial "qiewei + O +VP" structure.Analysis shows that the structure of "qiewei + O + VP" originates from the need to express the strong subjective and emotional attitude of the subject.The "Wei" in the structure is not a verb to express the meaning of "think",but a preposition.The analysis of the confusions in the "wei + O + VP" structure in synchronic dimension is based on modern Chinese corpus.There are two main reasons for the confusions: on the one hand,scholars have different definitions of prepositions’ functions;on the other hand,it is insufficient and limited to divide prepositions on the basis of semantic functions.Because the specific use of "wei + O + VP" structure is closely related to the subjective wishes,the confusion needs to be eliminated by referring to a more specific context after considering the subject.Confusions includes:confusion of the purpose and the cause,the purpose and the beneficiary,the beneficiary and the substituted object,as well as the object and the cause.The last part starts with the inadequacies of related preposition research,by linking the research object with the structure of "gei /ti + O + VP",introducing the concept of "acceptability" of the pragmatic principle,explicitly identify the expressions that belong to the using tendency rather than the bias or grammatical errors,such as the collocation of the structure of "wei / ti + O + VP" with the non-human object and the damaged object.In addition,this paper systematically analyzes the empathy advantage of "wei + O + VP(E)" structure and the "wei+ O + VP" structure’s advantage in political discourse.
