Mei Guangdi was a famous Chinese scholar and thinker in the 20 th century. His new humanism literary view combined the traditional Confucian culture and Babbitt’s humanism.Mei’s new humanism tended to be moderate criticism,so he refused to completely separate traditional culture and become fully westernized. He paid special attention to the nationality in Chinese culture, however, which was different from the viewpoint of Westernized Chinese style, the new humanism took Chinese national culture as the noumenon and focused on the real noumenon value of western culture at the same time.In literature, new humanism was different from the rigidity of traditional reversionism,it required us to innovate on the basis of imitating the spirit of the ancients.Mei’s growing environment and life in America promoted the formation and improvement of his literary view, thus showing strong national and Chinese characteristics.Mei’s new humanism took the training of more perfect people as the pursuit goal of aesthetic education, absorbed the Chinese traditional aesthetic education thoughts and the western aesthetic education modernization content, enhanced the individual quality accomplishment and thus promoted the social development and progress. In the period of the May 4th movement, when facing the urgent task of striving for national sovereignty and independence and people’s liberation,Mei’s new humanism literary and artistic thoughts had an anachronistic aspect compared with the doctrine of the new culture school, but its insistence on Chinese cultural nationality, sinicization of western learning and reflection on modernity were worthy of affirmation.Especially at present,China is in a critical period of cultural construction and modernization transformation.Mei’s new humanism provides a new possibility for the difficulties faced by modern China, including the promotion of cultural soft power, the enhancement of national belief and the enhancement of cultural self-confidence.
