A Comparative Harmonic Study Of The Four "Peueas Et Mslisande"

“Pelleas et Melisande”is dramatic work by Maeterlinck that depicts a love story that ends in tragedy.With the play’s great popularity,Faure,Debussy,Sibelius and Schoenberg all composed four works on this subject.In this paper,it analyzes and compares the four comp osers’ harmonic techniques in the four different pieces of“Pelleas et Melisande”,and draws conclusions about the personal styles of these four composers.This paper is divided into three chapters.The first chapter deals with the comparative analysis of harmonic materials,namely“Chord structure”and“Chord progressions”;the second chapter involves the comparative analysis of modal tonality,namely“Types of modal tonalit y”and“Organization of modal tonality”;the last chapter is the comparative analysis of harmo nic styles,respectively“Representation of dominant motives in harmonic techniques”and“Repr esentation of personal style”.Through these six aspects,the author analyzes and compares fo ur works of “Pelleas et Melisande”,while exploring the harmonic styles used by the four composers in each of the four works.
