| It is proposed in The English Curriculum Standard for General Senior High School(2020 revised edition)that one of the English teaching objectives is to cultivate students’ English subject key competences.It includes four aspects:language competence,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.However,the phenomenon that teachers neglect cultural awareness in English teaching is common.In the new era of cultivating students’ key competences,teachers should realize the importance of cultivating students’ cultural awareness.Moreover,English reading is one of the most vital approaches to language learning,and it is a crucial method to cultivate students’ cultural awareness.The purpose of this thesis is to explore the ways of cultivating students’ cultural awareness in English reading teaching under the background of key competences.The author puts forward two research questions:(1)What are the effective ways to improve students’ cultural awareness in English reading teaching under the background of key competences?(2)What is the effect of cultivating cultural awareness on the improvement of senior high school students’ reading ability under the background of key competences?The author selected 90 students from two classes in Grade Two of Yingkou Senior High School and four English teachers as the subjects of the investigation.The study lasted for about three months,and the questionnaires,interviews and tests were used to collect data.After three months of the experiment,and through thorough analysis,the major findings are as follow: firstly,under the background of key competences,the teachers can cultivate students’ cultural awareness by introducing cultural background knowledge,comparing Chinese and western cultures,exploring the cultural connotation of vocabulary,and developing cross-cultural awareness.Secondly,cultivating students’ cultural awareness in English reading teaching can develop their English thinking ability and help students form good reading habits,which significantly improve their reading ability. |
