| With the intensification of China’s basic education curriculum reform, more emphasis has been placed on fostering students’ positive affective factors and individual meaning construction in the process of reading. However, most of the current reading classrooms are dominated by teachers’ teaching, ignoring the students’main body position.Reading classes are so complicated that students’ understanding is fragmented, which makes students rely heavily on teachers’ ideas and lack space for individual understanding. The Reading Circles model is a relatively new reading model that bases on student-centered,peer cooperation,multi-role participation in analyzing texts, cultivating students’ reading habits, establishing reading confidence, and conducting multiple evaluations, which precisely solve the current reading problems. Therefore, this study has applied the model to junior high school English reading class to improve students’ reading proficiency and attitudes towards reading. This study answered the following two questions:(1)What are the effects of Reading Circles model on students’ reading proficiency?(2)What are the changes of Reading Circles model on students’ attitude towards reading? The author carried out a three-month experiment in two parallel classes in a junior high school. The experimental class had 50 students who taught with Reading Circles model;the control class had 48 students who were taught by the conventional reading teaching model. The research instruments for this study included questionnaires, tests, and interviews. The author used SPSS 22.0 to collect and analyze the data from the questionnaire as well as the test after the experiment. The research results indicate that the application of Reading Circles model in junior high school English reading class is effective in improving students’ reading proficiency.Secondly, the application of the Reading Circles model in the English reading class of junior high school is effective to change students’ attitudes towards reading. |
