| The translation report is on Chinese-English practice of the Introduction to Xiling Snow Mountain and Leshan Giant Buddha.The translation project was assigned by Sichuan Chenglan Exhibition Co.,Ltd.and the translated work is expected to attract foreign delegates,help them learn tourism resources of Xiling Snow Mountain and Leshan Giant Buddha,and further promote the communication and cooperation between China and other countries in tourism.The original work,as a tourism publicity text,introduces the development,sights,legends,and cuisines of those two scenic areas.In addition,it boasts profound cultural connotations,concise languages,varied sentence structures and vivid descriptions of scenery.Furthermore,multiple rhetorical devices are employed to increase the appeal to tourists,including hyperbole,metaphor,simile,parallelism and so on.Based on features of the source text mentioned above,variational translation theory,put forward by Professor Huang Zhonglian,is adopted to guide the translation of this project.The theory requires the translator to use adaptation techniques,such as addition,deletion,edition,narration,condensation,integration,and alteration,to ingest the content or the form of the source text according to the specific demands of the specific target readers under specific conditions.What’s more,it pursues improving the efficiency of the translator and making the translated work abundant in information,economical in length,precise and excellent in content.In the translation project,six adaptation techniques are employed to tackle translation difficulties in the original work,which are addition,deletion,edition,narration,condensation,and alteration.The report has five chapters in total.Chapter One introduces the background and significance of the translation task,as well as the translation process.Chapter Two is the source text analysis: an overall introduction to tourism publicity texts is presented;typical characteristics of the original are listed and analyzed linguistically,culturally and rhetorically.Chapter Three is the theoretical basis,which introduces variational translation theory and discusses the feasibility of the theory guiding the translation project.Chapter Four is the case study,where typical examples are demonstrated and analyzed to explain the adoption of six adaptation techniques.Chapter Five is the conclusion of the report,in which major findings and limitations of variational translation theory guiding this project are summarized and some suggestions to other translators in tourism industries are offered from the bottom of the translator’s heart.The translation of the Introduction to Xiling Snow Mountain and Leshan Giant Buddha is conducive to the sound development of tourism industries in Sichuan Province and the intercultural communication of tourism resources in China.Moreover,based on the translation practice guided by the selected theory,the translation report discusses and offers some adaptation techniques as reference for latter translation activities in tourism. |
