A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Long Sentences In The Sunflower Sisters （Excerpts） Under The Guidance Of The Functional Equivalence Theory

As the process of globalization continues to advance,translation,as a medium of international communication and exchange,builds bridges for cultural communication.This report is based on the English to Chinese translation of Sunflower Sisters by American author Martha Hall Carey.Sunflower Sisters is a novel set in the American Civil War.Inspired by a true story,the author depicts a vivid scene of the Civil War from a woman’s perspective,and the main line of the story gradually extends from the cruel plantation to the war-torn New York City,portraying the brutality of the war.Guided by American translation theorist Eugene A.Nida’s theory of Functional Equivalence,the translator explores the application of Functional Equivalence theory in the translation of historical-themed novels based on the translation of the source text Sunflower Sisters as a practice.During the translation process,the translator found there are a large number of long sentences,which is the main feature of the book.In order to make the translation accurately reproduce the culture of the source language,eliminate cultural differences,and attract readers’ attention and interest,the translator finally selected the Functional Equivalence theory as the guiding theory.In this paper,the translator adopts the method of case study and summarizes the application of the theory of Functional Equivalence,such as lexical equivalence,syntactic equivalence,cultural equivalence,to achieve overall Functional Equivalence by analyzing and studying the translation practice of the translated texts.The translator has done a lot of translation preparation work,encountered difficulties in the translation process and finally found solutions,and also carried out proofreading work after the translation.Lastly,the translator summarizes the difficulties that could not be solved during the translation process.At the same time,the translator briefly outlines the lessons learned in this translation practice and provides references for future translations of American war books.
