Reading plays a crucial role in senior high school English teaching and learning,which can enhance students’ comprehensive language competence and thinking skills.However,there are still many problems existing in senior high school English reading teaching.Some are still teacher-centered and students are passive to the reading materials,which cannot meet the requirement of The New Curriculum Standard of English for Senior High School(2017).This thesis explores how English reading teaching in senior high schools with the help of the reading circle model can improve senior high school students’ English reading characters and their English reading competence,and it focuses on two research questions:Question 1: What influences does the reading circle model have on senior high school students’ English reading characters?Question 2: What influences does the reading circle model have on senior high school students’ English reading competence?In this research,the reading circle model was applied to daily English reading teaching in the form of action research.Two rounds of action research were carried out in Class One,Grade One in Guiyang No.10 Middle School with 40 students involved in this research for four months.Besides,the author distributed questionnaires,conducted tests,and observed the students in this process.After two rounds of the reading circles teaching,the research found that students reading characters are improved with the help of the reading circle model.Students perform well in their daily readings including their reading interests,attitudes,behavior,and their classroom discussion.Meanwhile,students’ reading competence is improved with the help of the reading circle model.The reading circle teaching model can also help promote students’ cooperation.Students work well in group discussions,and they can help each other when they are discussing.This research brings implications for future English reading teaching.For teachers,they should design varied activities in teaching and gradually transfer the power of controlling the class to students through the practice of the reading circle model.For students,they should develop interests and good reading habits in English reading,and gradually achieve English subject core competencies.However,the cultivation of English reading habits and competence is a long-term project,which requires great patience from both teachers and students.
