This is an English-Chinese translation report based on Chapter 3 of The Island of Missing Trees. The source text is selected from a well-known Turkish female writer Elif ?hafak’s latest novel, which is based on a love story between hero Kostas and heroine Defne, revealing Cyprus’ s painful history. It describes the trauma and suffering which brings the division between the Turkish and Greek communities in Cyprus, including their residents and young generation. It is a story about belonging and identification, love and pain, homeland and ecological consciousness.First of all,the translation practice report describes the background, significance of translation practice and the necessary preparations made in the translation process.Secondly, this report analyzes the translation difficulties in the process of translation from the lexical, syntactical, textual and rhetorical levels. In terms of lexical level, there are a lot of proper nouns and some Turkish and Greek in the source text. The translator uses the annotation to help the target language readers understand the source text much better. At the same time, the translator adopts conversion of parts of speech, amplification, omission, etc.to make the translation more accurate and smooth. As for the aspect of syntactical level, the translator uses some translation methods, including linear translation, shifts of voices, restructuring, dividing, colloquialism and free translation,to translate passive sentences and complex sentences which require multiple translation methods in the source text in order to make the translation in line with Chinese expressing habits. In the aspect of textual level, the translator enumerates the difficult environment description and character description in the source text and uses the methods of cohesion by words or phrases and coherence by action verbs. In terms of rhetorical level, the translator uses simile, metonymy and repetition.Through this translation practice and report writing, the translator has probed into some methods in novel translation and has gained a deeper understanding of translation. It is hoped that this translation practice as well as the experience can provide reference and certain value to other translators who may translate relevant texts in the future.
