A Report On Chinese-English Translation Of Forthing Lingzhi M5 Operation Manual(Excerpts)

Under the development plan of Made in China 2025,Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor has continuously explored overseas markets in recent years,forming a certain scale of automobile export.Forthing Lingzhi M5 is exactly one of the models produced and exported by Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor.In order to help overseas dealers and overseas users accurately understand the operation of this model,the author translated its manual during the internship.The source text of the translation task is excerpted from Chapters 3 to 6 of Forthing Lingzhi M5 Operation Manual,which provides detailed descriptions and instructions of the operation of this vehicle for users from four chapters: Control,Interior Layout,Safety,and Driving.The Operation Manual contains a large number of terminologies and English abbreviations.Active voice,subject-less sentences and imperative sentences are mostly applied in the source text,which embodies the characteristics of objectivity,preciseness,accuracy,and conciseness of informative text from the lexical and syntactic level.Since the main purpose of automotive text translation is to convey the information accurately,which is consistent with the characteristics of emphasizing on semantic equivalence on the basis of sacrificing formal equivalence in Translation Shifts Theory,this translation practice report will analyze the guiding role of this theory in the translation of automotive texts from level shift and category shift combined with relevant examples.This report includes five parts: Introduction,Translation Process,Theoretical Basis,Case Study,and Conclusion.It presents the work that has been done before translation,during translation and after translation from various aspects.Case Study analyzes and expounds the rationality of the translation of translation examples from the perspective of level shift and category shift,combined with the common translation strategies of sci-tech text translation and the different language characteristics of Chinese and English.According to different types of shifts in level shifts and category shifts,the translation methods adopted in this task are as follows: shifting active voice into passive voice,shifting affirmative and negative sentences into each other,shifting verbs into nouns and prepositions,shifting from short sentences with multiple verbs to multi-level compound sentences etc.Through the translation practice,the author not only has a further understanding of the translation methods for automotive text,but also finds that the Translation Shifts Theory can effectively guide the translation of automobile texts,which has strong applicability and operability.
