An E-C Translation Report On Love Is The Strongest Medicine（Chapters 1-5）

The source text is excerpted from Chapters one to five of Love Is the Strongest Medicine: Notes from a Cancer Doctor on Connection,Creativity,and Compassion.The author of this book is an oncologist.He tells stories about the treatment process for patients from the perspective of doctors and patients,and explains how the author combines music,compassion with treatment,opening up a new perspective on the cancer treatment.The translation practice is based on Professor Li Changshuan’s translation framework “Comprehension,Expression,and Adaptation” and so is the report structured to analyze the difficulties and typical cases encountered during the translation process.Preparations are key to the success of translation practice,including staff arrangement and task distribution,reading parallel texts and selecting translation tools.Difficulties in translating job are common.Both lexical and syntactical difficulties are encountered in translation,such as polysemy,the translation of medical term,and the translation of long sentences and clauses.When translation is under way,comprehension is the first step,and then comes actual expression,and last step is adaptation.Comprehension includes the comprehension of words and phrases and sentence structures,with the help of dictionaries,parallel texts,context and other translation methods to solve comprehension problems.Expression contains adjusting sentence structures,avoiding Europeanized translation and other methods to express the original content and language characteristics more accurately and fluently.Adaptation comprises ellipsis,amplification and audience awareness to better convey the original information and achieve the purpose of translation.By translating the source text,the translator has developed her capacity for translating English into Chinese and has a better understanding of translation skills.Second,during the process of translation,the translator has optimized her knowledge framework and learned a lot about medicine.Meanwhile,it is hoped that the translation can be meaningful and helpful to translators who are interested in the medical translation.Finally,it is expected that the target text can encourage readers who are losing faith in life to rekindle hope and move forward with optimism in life.
